In the early morning hours of January 14th, the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to a traffic accident on the 710 freeway near Imperial Highway. The responding units found a multi-vehicle accident with injuries. A total of 5 patients were transported to local hospitals, 2 were reported to be critical. LAFD - Arson Suspect Caught - 1-2-12

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (KTLA) -- The suspect arrested in connection with more than 50 recent fires in and around the Hollywood area appears to have been battling the U.S. government over the immigration status of his mother.

He has been identified as 24-year-old Harry Burkhart, a German national and a resident of the Hollywood area.

Burkhart was booked Monday afternoon on arson charges and is being held without bail
He has been charged with one count of arson so far, but additional charges are expected.

Burkhart is due in court in Van Nuys on Wednesday morning.

Authorities have released few details about Burkhart, citing the ongoing investigation.

At the news conference Monday evening, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said unnamed federal officials recognized the man and gave police information about him.

He said authorities' "huge concern" now is whether Burkhart acted alone.

He said investigators are still at work, and "are acting as if [Burkhart] did not act alone."

"We are confident in our investigation, but we have a long way to go," Beck said.

A joint task force of city and county fire and police department personnel is investigating the fires.

Officials from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are also working on the case.

"We have our primary arsonist responsible for these, what we can nail him down on, and distinguish that between any other arsonists that may be setting fires, because you know these types of events bring out copycats," ATF Special Agent Karl Anglin told KTLA.

Burkhart was detained after Los Angeles sheriff's reserve deputy Shervin Lalezary spotted his minivan around 3 a.m. Monday driving near Sunset Blvd. and Fairfax Ave.

The van matched the description put out by investigators of a vehicle possibly linked to the fires.

Lalezary works as a real estate attorney, and receives $1 a year as a reserve sheriff's deputy. He was only on his fourth patrol.

Sunset Boulevard was closed while police searched the Burkhart's mini-van, which had British Columbia plates. He was detained as a person of interest and later arrested.

Law enforcement sources told the Los Angeles Times that detectives found materials that could have been used to set fires inside Burkhart's van.

No new fires have been reported since Burkhart's arrest, officials said.

The suspect was stopped in his van at Sunset Blvd. and Fairfax Ave. in Hollywood. I arrived a short time later and managed to get a shot of the van before LAPD locked the area down as a crime scene.

LAFD - Structure - 67th & St. Andrews - 1-1-12

In the early morning hours of January 1st, 2012 the LAFD responded to a reported structure fire near 67th St. and St. Andrews Pl. in South Central Los Angeles. TF66 was first on scene and had smoke and fire showing from a single story residence. The occupant advised that the TV blew up and caught the living room on fire. LAFD - Arson Fire - 12-31-11 - New Haven St.

Several arson fires were lit over 4 nights in the Hollywood, West Hollywood and North Hollywood areas. I managed to make it to a few of the fires. Before the person responsible was caught over 55 fires were started. Most all of the fires started were in autos and the arsonist seemed to favor autos in carports. LACoFD - Structure Fire - 12-17-11 - Ladera Heights

In the early morning hours of December 17, 2011, the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Culver City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 5600 block of Sherbourne St. in the community of Ladera Heights. Upon arrival they found heavy smoke issuing from the structure and pack rat like conditions inside. The units got quick knockdown and did rescue a dog who was inside at the time of the fire. Oak Hills - San Bernardino Sun - Firefighters surrounded part of the 1,100-acre Hill Fire in the Cajon Pass overnight Friday, but have concerns about today's high heat, low humidity and windy conditions.
More than 950 firefighters battled the blaze, getting about 30 percent of the fire contained.
"We're waiting to see what the winds and heat do to it today," said U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Robin Prince. High temperatures in the pass are expected to be 95 and 98 degrees, with winds at 15 to 20 mph and humidity at 13 to 15 percent.The 15 Freeway has been reopened in both directions, but fire officials warned there may be periodic closures due to smoke. The Hill Fire began in the center divider between the north- and southbound 15 Freeway south of Oak Hill Road at 12:43 p.m. Flames jumped the freeway and began burning west toward homes in the Oak Hills area near Hesperia. It destroyed two mobile homes and damaged three other residences. Firefighters have evacuated 1,500 homes. A mandatory evacuation remains in place south of Mesquite Street, east of Baldy Mesa Avenue and west of Oak Hills Road. Prince said about 11 people stayed at the Victorville Fairgrounds where an evacuation center had been opened Friday. Two firefighters suffered injuries while fighting the blaze.
Firefighters expect the fire to be fully contained by Sunday evening.

BDC - Plane Crash - 7-5-11

SUMMIT VALLEY • VV Daily Press - The small Cessna airplane that crashed into a parked car and then rolled into a house had just taken off from Hesperia Airport just before the incident, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Hesperia station officials said.
“It appears it went through a field before striking the vehicle, then sheering off the wing which caused fuel to spill and finally coming to rest on the house,” Sgt. Colleen Kuhn said.
Sandy Banberg was at home with her son and his girlfriend when the aircraft crashed. No one in the home was hurt in the incident.
It was first reported the pilot and passenger of the Cessna had been transported to the hospital with minor injuries, but San Bernardino County Fire officials at the scene stated the two refused medical treatment.

HACIENDA HEIGHTS, Calif. (KABC) -- A fire that engulfed and destroyed a Catholic church in Hacienda Heights early Saturday has been ruled an act of arson. The blaze broke out at St. John Vianney in the 1300 block of Turnbull Canyon Road shortly after midnight. The priest, who was asleep in the rectory adjacent to the church, realized the building was on fire when he heard loud popping noises. The church was fully engulfed when fire crews and arson investigators arrived on scene. Authorities said the fire was raging hottest in the auditorium of the church. They said the wooden pew inside the auditorium accelerated the blaze. It took firefighters several hours to get the fire under control. Crews were able to stop the fire from spreading to the rectory and also saved precious relics from inside the church. The church was completely destroyed with damage estimates at approximately $9 million. "We were here as original parishioners. We spent hours building this church and having fund raisers," said parishioner Anita Dunbar. "Keeping the faith, we'll build it again," said another parishioner. No injuries were reported. No information was released on the identity of the suspect. The Arson and Explosives Detail of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is leading the investigation. On Sunday, the San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to an off road traffic collision in the community of Landers. On arrival, BE19 found that a rider on a ATC had rolled and crashed. The patients condition required air transport so an air ambulance was requested. Mercy Air 18 responded and transported the patient to an area trauma center. LAFD Firefighter Glenn Allen Services 2-24/25-11

I attended both the Candlelight Vigil at Station 78 and the funeral services downtown. Below is the official LAFD statement.

(LAFD) Glenn Allen, 61, had been with LAFD for 36 years, having joined in July of 1974, according to the mayor’s office. He was one year away from retirement.

Allen was part of the team that battling a blaze at 1546 N. Viewsite Drive in the Hollywood Hills just before midnight on the 16th. In addition to Allen, three other Los Angeles firefighters and two Los Angeles County firefighters were injured.

Per LAFD policy, a formal investigation is underway to determine the cause of Allen’s injuries and the circumstances surrounding his death.

“He was doing what he wanted to do. He was doing what he loved. He was serving the City of Los Angeles,” said LAFD Chief Millage Peaks. “Glenn Allen spent 36 and a half years of his life serving the City that he loves, serving the City that he lives in and serving a City that he was very proud of.”

A statement from the fire department reads:

“The men and women of the Los Angeles Fire Department thank you for your kind words and sentiment at this time of overwhelming sorrow and immense loss. The Allen Family and the Los Angeles Fire Department has received a tremendous outpouring of support during this difficult time. Your firefighters wish to thank you and express our deepest appreciation for all the kind words and gestures that have been provided.”

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa ordered all city flags to be lowered to half-staff in Allen’s honor.

In a statement, the mayor said, “Today, I join all Angelenos in mourning the loss of Firefighter Glenn Allen, a fearlessly committed firefighter who dedicated 36 years of his life to protecting the people of Los Angeles. Glenn was a valiant hero whose selfless sacrifice will forever be honored. This tragedy serves as a somber, yet powerful reminder that the brave men and women of the Los Angeles Fire Department put their lives on the line each and every day to keep us safe from harm. My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Firefighter Allen and his extended family of Firefighters at LAFD.”

In a statement, Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Krekorian said, “I was deeply saddened today to learn of the passing of Glenn Allen, a brave Los Angeles city firefighter who died in the line of duty this week. This was a tragic reminder of the daily risks the heroic men and women of our Los Angeles Fire Department face and the inspiring courage they constantly exhibit. I extend my deepest sympathies to his family during their period of grief, and to all the men and women of the Los Angeles Fire Department. The entire city family shares in their grief and stands in solidarity with them.”

In a statement, the Los Angeles Police Protective League said, “Los Angeles police officers join our brethren firefighters in mourning the death of Los Angeles firefighter Glenn Allen, who died from injuries he suffered while fighting a fire on Wednesday. The death of Glenn Allen is a tragic and sad reminder of how much gratitude we owe to first responders, who routinely put their lives on the line for the public’s safety. We must remember the ultimate sacrifice Glenn selflessly gave after more than 38 years dedicated to protecting and saving the lives of Los Angeles residents. Our thoughts are with the Allen family, whose lives will be changed forever, but we hope they can take solace in knowing that Glenn was a hero and that as his extended public safety family, we will always be there to support them.”

San Bernardino County - Air Ambulance - Means Dry Lake - 2-12-11

On Saturday evening, the San Bernardino County Fire Department was dispatched to a off road vehicle rollover on Means Dry Lake in Johnson Valley. Over the past week the largest off road race in the US had been taking place and even though the event was now over, there were still thousands of people camping on the lake bed. The rollover occurred at another location but the patient was brought back to his camp to meet up with the fire dept. While enroute to the incident, information provided to us by dispatch prompted us to launch an air ambulance. Mercy Air 22 was dispatched and arrived about 20 minutes after we were onscene. Means Dry Lake Event - King of the Hammers Race - 2-12-11

Over the past week, Means Dry Lake in Johnson Valley saw the King of the Hammers off road race. An estimated crowd of 20,000 people were packed into the lake bed. There was a sea of motorhomes, toy haulers and every kind of off road vehicle imaginable. The San Bernardino County Fire Department was on hand keeping a close eye on things. Thank goodness for GPS units, for when you have a dispatch that says, 'the incident is located near a white toy hauler near the middle of the lake bed...' We did have one incident that required air transport for one person and that will get its own post.

The photos are from many areas of California, Nevada and Arizona including Johnson Valley, Barstow, Landers, Joshua Tree, Kern County, and Palmdale. There is also a set from the Lake Sutherland and Anza Borrego areas of San Diego County. Some others include Searchlight NV, Kingman AZ, Seligman AZ, Grand Canyon AZ, and Lake Havasu AZ

BDC - Structure - 1-7-11 Lucerne Valley

The San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire on Custer Ave in Lucerne Valley. BDC E8 was the first engine on scene and reported a working fire to the rear of the structure. The crew from E8 got a quick knockdown and did a good save to the structure. Engine 331 from the Apple Valley FPD assisted the county.

BDC - Structure - 12-25-10 - Mohawk Incident

YUCCA VALLEY — (Hi Desert Star) A Christmas Day apartment fire destroyed two apartments, damaged two more and left seven people homeless.

San Bernardino County units from Yucca Valley, Yucca Mesa and Joshua Tree, assisted by Cal Fire Yucca Valley and the Morongo Valley Fire Department, responded at 1:09 p.m. to the 6900 block of Mohawk Trail, where they learned that victims might be trapped in a two-story apartment complex.

On arrival, the crew from Yucca Valley Medic Engine 41 reported flame and smoke were showing from the first and second floors of the complex. They began fire control and rescue operations.

A woman in a wheelchair was found inside her apartment and was helped out of the burning building by county firefighters and sheriff’s deputies.

The woman told firefighters she was sleeping in bed and woke up to find the “whole side of the window on fire.” She got up and alerted two other residents, including her 4-year-old grandson, of the fire, Battalion Chief Dan Munsey reported.

With help from a friend, the woman initially tried to extinguish the fire by pouring water from pots and pans on the flames. “Quickly they realized the extent of the fire and exited the structure,” Munsey said.

Five engines and one truck were needed to control the fire, which completely destroyed two apartment units and caused minor damage to two others.

Shirley Peters, representing the local American Red Cross chapter, was called to the scene and provided immediate shelter, food and clothing for seven affected people in the apartment complex.

No one was hurt in the fire, which was caused by a faulty electrical outlet in an apartment’s back bedroom.

Dale Adams was visiting his mother at the apartment complex at the time of the fire. Adams tried to fight the blaze and helped evacuate people in the four-plex apartment complex of the fire.

“I smelled something like plastic, like a chemical smell,” Adams said by phone Monday afternoon. “The next building down had smoke coming out the window.

“I went running out the front. We could see fire up to the window sill,” Adams continued.

He went to the front door and found a woman and her grandson on the porch; they told him her cat was inside.

“Smoke was rolling out the front door pretty thick,” Adams said. “She took off running back into the apartment. The little boy followed her. The place was already so full of smoke you couldn’t get a breath of air.

“I went in and drug the boy back outside and told him to go to the parking lot. I found the occupant near where the fire was, on her hands and knees calling for the cat. I grabbed her by the arm and dragged her to the front door.”

The cat did not survive.

After ensuring there were no other people in the apartment, Adams returned to size up the situation.

“It was so thick with smoke I couldn’t breathe, so I had to come back out and get a breath of fresh air. My mom was there with the fire extinguisher so I went in with it, then came back out for more air. I made it to the bedroom, pointed it blindly at the orange glow and pulled it for about five seconds.

Adams saw the fire crawling across the ceiling, “Like in a movie or something. It was really trippy. When I saw the flames above my head I decided it was time to pull out of there.”

BE19 was put on the ticket as part of the second alarm. By the time we got there from Landers most of the action was over. I did manage to get a few shots....

LAFD - Structure - 12-24-10

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Authorities say packrat conditions fueled a fire at a Boyle Heights home, which was so badly damaged that it had to be “red-tagged” as too dangerous to live in. The fire broke out late Thursday night in the 100 block of South Clarence Street and responding firefighters reported “heavy fire” on the first floor, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said. The blaze was extinguished less about a half hour later. Neighbors said they saw a woman running from the home just after the fire started. Two men who live in the home were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, RMG News reported. They were not hospitalized. About two hours after the fire broke out, an investigator at the scene said the roof and at least one wall of the home were badly damaged. He requested a Building and Safety inspector to come out and “red tag” the home as uninhabitable, a Los Angeles Fire Department dispatcher said.

High Desert Storm - 12-21/22-10

December 21 and 22, 2010 saw some significant storm activity in the High Desert. I got some shots of the Mojave River at Rock Springs Rd where there were two back to back Swift Water Rescues made by the San Bernardino County Fire Department. There are also some shots of the Mojave Forks Dam outflow and you can see the back up on the south side of the dam near Arrowhead Lake Rd. and Hwy 173. Geminid Meteor Shower - 12-14-10

It was cold but there was no wind and after about midnight the clouds blew out and we had perfect conditions for photographing the Geminid Meteor Shower. LAFD - Physical Rescue - 12-11-10

Two women and a man were killed Saturday night in the city of Vernon when a man driving a pickup struck their car, officials said Sunday. A 6-year-old boy, identified as the son of one of the women killed, survived. Vernon police said four people in a Honda were traveling north on Alameda Street when they were struck by a Dodge pickup at East Vernon Avenue. The driver of the Dodge, who was alone, fled the scene but was apprehended a short while later. Police declined to identify the driver of the Dodge Sunday morning but said he is expected to be charged with two felonies - hit-and-run and driving while intoxicated.

VERNON (KTLA) -- Police in Vernon have arrested the suspected drunken driver of a pickup truck that was involved in a crash that killed three people and injured a child. The accident happened just before 10 p.m. Saturday at Alameda Street and Vernon Avenue in the city of Vernon. Investigators have determined that a Honda with four people inside traveling north on Alameda St. was hit broadside by a Dodge pickup truck traveling west on Vernon Ave. The driver of the truck allegedly fled the scene, but was later captured and arrested on suspicion of hit and run. He has been identified as Issac Bandt. He is currently hospitalized with minor injuries. Brandt was expected to be transferred to the L.A. County jail where he would be held without bail until his preliminary court hearing.

LACoFD - Traffic - 147 - 12-6-10

In the early morning hours of December 6th the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to a reported traffic collision on the transition from the EB105 to the SB710. Initially the responding units had trouble locating the vehicle but upon looking further the vehicle was found to be rolled over the side of the embankment. The vehicle had one occupant and he was still trapped inside. While the crews were working on extricating the patient, a second TC occurred when an out of control driver struck Squad 147. LAFD - Blueline vs Auto - 12-2-10

On December 2nd, 2010 at 10:30 PM, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a Blueline train vs an automobile at the 1600 block of 41st street in south Los Angeles near Newton. In the early morning hours of Sunday, November 28th, LAFD responded to a reported structure fire at 40th Place and Broadway Ave. Upon arrival the first in unit advised he had a multi-story, residential over commercial with light smoke showing. Mike Meadows, Al Simmons and I arrived within a couple minutes and were able to capture a few images as the companies got knockdown. CALFIRE - RRU - Pacific Fire - 11-14-10

RUBIDOUX (KTLA) -- Firefighters in Riverside County contained a potentially dangerous brush fire Sunday in high winds, heat and low humidity. The fire started just before 1:00 p.m area of Pacific Avenue and Canal Street, not far from a small tract of homes and outbuildings.

145 firefighters from 17 engine companies responded to the fire. 25 mile an hour winds made for difficult fire fighting conditions. Still, crews were able to contain the fire at 45 acres in less than two hours.

Investigators say the fire was started by someone using a power saw.

CALFIRE officials say that person will be sent a bill to cover the firefighting cost.

San Bernardino (Press Enterprise) A fire that began in a room containing a washer and dryer caused an estimated $100,000 damage to a home in the 400 block of West 24th Street in San Bernardino on Saturday, an official said. The city Fire Department received a report of a structure fire at 3:52 p.m. and arrived to see smoke and flames coming out a rear window, said Mike Arvizo, a Fire Department public information officer. The two-alarm fire drew about 20 firefighters to the scene, Arvizo said. The fire, which was out in about 10 minutes, is being investigated and might have started in the dryer. The woman who lives there and her dog were not home at the time of the fire. There were no injuries.

San Bernardino County Sheriff Helitac Training - 11-11-10

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Aviation Division offered the Fire Department some basic Helitac training. This will aid in rapidly removing victims that need to be hoisted to a Rescue Helicopter. On Thursday Novemebr 11th, the San Bernardino County Fire Department's ME305, ME91, BC117 and Training Captain Jim Pearson attended the training. We were given instruction on how to do a proper hover-step and also how to prepare all the rigging to hoist a patient in a litter basket. San Bernardino City & USFS Wildland Fire - 11-6-10

Firefighters responded to a reported wildland fire in the City of San Bernardino at the north end of Sepulveda street shortly after five p.m. on November 6, 2010. Fire grew to 40 acres in grass and chaparral burning uphill towards state highway 18 in the San Bernardino National Forest. Firefighters made excellent progress stopping the spread of the fire from crossing the highway. State Highway 18 was closed to all traffic between lower and upper Waterman Canyon and reopened at approx. 10:20pm. Old Waterman Canyon Road served as the alternate route during the closure, motorists experienced a slight delay. There were no immediate threats to the local community and no residents were evacuated. The fire was under unified command with the City of San Bernardino and the US Forest Service.

San Bernardino County Fire - Rollover - 10-31-10 - Landers

About 4:30pm we had a walk in report of a traffic collision on Hwy 247 south of the station. We advised Comm Center and responded BE19 toward the incident. As we got close to the intersection of Hwy 247 and Reche Rd. we found a single vehicle that had gone of the road and rolled over. The vehicle had two occupants, one adult and one child. The child had very minor injuries and the adult had injuries that required transport to a local hospital. The cause of the accident was unknown however CHP was investigating. Just after 2am on October 29th, LAFD Company 57 responded to traffic collision on Western Ave. at 81st. Street. A driver struck two parked cars and ended up on the sidewalk. San Bernardino County - Air Ambulance - Means Dry Lake - 10-16-10

On Saturday, October 16th, the San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to a medical call on the north end of Means Dry Lake. BE19, UT43, MA42R and Morongo Basin Ambulance were dispatched. Shortly after going enroute we were advised that MBA was requesting an air ambulance due to the information we had been given at the time of dispatch. Mercy Air 2 from Victorville was launched with a 30 minute ETA. BE19 was the first to arrive and found a patient with a severe hand injury. Once MA42R arrived, patient care was transferred to them so BE19 could wet down the LZ for Mercy. Once Mercy landed the patient was loaded and flown to an area trauma center. Ord Mountain Repeater Repair and Lightning

In an effort to have reliable communications for our EPN activities we use a series of mountain top repeaters. Some of the systems we use are commercial private systems and some are Amateur Radio repeaters. The K7FY repeater on Ord Mountain has been down for some time and needed some repair and maintenance. On Saturday, October 2nd, Chris (EPN-560), Sandy (K7FY), Gil (K7GIL) and I went up to Ord Mountain to get the system back online. We replaced the batteries and did some antenna repair. While we were there a few thunderstorms rolled by and I managed to get one bolt in the lens.

LAPD Emergency Landing in Hollywood

In the early morning hours of October 8th, an LAPD helicopter made an emergency landing in a small park at the intersection of Santa Monica Blvd and Cole St. Just before 2am I heard an LAPD Air Unit say there were having mechanical trouble and were going to have to land. They requested LAPD officers, Fire Department and a RA to Santa Monica and Wilcox. The pilot found the small park to set down in and landed safely. There were no injuries.

On September 2nd at 9:20pm, the LAFD responded to a reported structure fire in the 5800 block of Olympic Ave. When units arrived they found a working fire under an attached carport with extension into the attic of an occupied structure. E58 quickly knocked down the attic fire while additional units worked on the carport. It took 32 firefighters just 19 minutes to control the fire. SBCO Fire - Commercial Structure - Landers - 8-28-10

On Saturday afternoon the San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to a reported Commercial Structure fire in the community of Landers. The fire was located in the 58000 block of Reche Rd. BE19 was the first unit on scene and upon arrival I had a 30' X 75' single story cabinet shop totally involved. In addition the the shop there were also 3 out buildings, 1 trailer and several joshua trees burning. We also had a burn victim and live power lines down to the rear of the fire. BE19 went into the attack mode and Firefighters Samantha Harper and William Youngberg used a handline to contain the fire and keep it from spreading to adjacent structures and the wildland. Units from Yucca Mesa, Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree and 29 Palms arrived to assist. Due to poor availability of water it took 45 mins to control the fire. Apple Valley FPD - Vegetation Fire - River Incident - 8-13-10

On Friday, August 13th at approximately 3pm, a brush fire started in the river bottom just south of the Lewis Center in Apple Valley. As the fire grew in size there was a minor threat to the Lewis Center. The fire got to be about 20 acres in size. LAFD - Commercial - Bronson St. - 7-14-10

On Wednesday, July 14th, 2010 at 10:00 PM, 12 Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, 6 LAFD Rescue Ambulances, 1 Arson Unit, 1 Urban Search and Rescue Unit, 1 Hazardous Materials Team, 2 EMS Battalion Captains, 3 Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams, 1 Division Chief Officer Command Team, 1 Rehab Air Tender under the direction of Assistant Chief David Yamahata responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 1107 North Bronson Avenue in Hollywood.

In response to multiple 9-1-1 calls, Firefighters quickly responded to a one-story metal-clad commercial building with heavy smoke and fire showing. Firefighters commenced a fierce interior attack through the smoke filled 100' X 150' structure that was loaded with movie props. This 54 year-old building was doing business as "C.P. Three Prop House" (C.P. is in reference to cinema props). Additional Firefighters were requested as it became difficult to access the seat of the fire, which was located at the north wall of the structure (D-side of the building). Truck companies remained on the triple gable roof, and were able to continually evaluate smoke and ventilators to guide the firefighters inside the structure to the source of the fire.

A total of 91 Firefighters battled the stubborn flames for one hour and 22 minutes before confining the flames entirely within the 22,319 square foot occupancy. Happily no civilian or Firefighter were reported injured during this incident. The dollar loss is still being tabulated and the cause of this late night blaze remains under an active investigation.

LAFD TF1, E47, Heavy Rescue 56 responded to a Physical Rescue on Hillsdale Dr. in the El Sereno area of East Los Angeles. By the time I arrived the single patient had been extricated and was being loaded into RA47 for transport. The call was intersting enough so I stuck around to get some pics of the heavy rescue removing the vehicles. The scene was at the bottom of a steep hill and a vehicle coming down the hill lost control, struck another parked, unoccupied vehicle and the both crashed into a house.

On Thursday evening, just after 5pm the San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Seaforth St. in Hesperia. ME302 was the first to arrive and found a fully involved passenger van and a well involved attached garage. Quick action by the responding crews kept the fire to the garage area of the structure minimizing loss to the rest of the house. LAFD - Los Angeles Lakers Game 7 -6-17-10

LAFD and LAPD had a strong presence in the city surrounding the Staples Center after the game. I went to Figueroa and Olympic to photograph the crowd. There were some disturbances but fairly minor compared to years past. I guess that's because the Lakers won. Here are the official stats from the LAFD:

In the 3 hours following the game, 50 strategically deployed Los Angeles Firefighters responded to 37 incidents within a one-half mile tactical area surrounding Staples Center. This included 15 rubbish fires, 1 vegetation fire, three vehicle fires and 18 medical aid requests for persons ill or injured. A total of 8 persons were taken by LAFD Ambulance to area hospitals. The age, gender, condition and affiliation of patients, as well as the circumstances of their illness and/or injuries was not immediately available.

Mercy Air 2 Crash Site Visit

On the evening of December 6th, 2006, Mercy Air 2, returning from Loma Linda crashed in the Cajon Pass. Just before 6pm, San Bernardino County units were dispatched to a reported aircraft down in the Summit Terrace area east of I15. After we had been enroute for a few minutes, I recall Comm Center advise the responding BC that this was possibly Mercy Air. BDC E40 arrived first and found that it was Mercy. Lost on that day was Pilot Paul Le Tour, Flight Nurse Katrina Kish and Flight Medic Jerald Miller. I had not been back to the actual site since the night of the incident. I visited the site last week and shot a few photos.

Amgen Tour of California - 5-21-10

The largest cycling event in America, the 2010 Amgen Tour of California is a Tour de France-style cycling road race, presented by AEG, that challenges the world’s top professional cycling teams to compete along a demanding course from May 16-23. Stage 6 of the race started in Palmdale and ends in Big Bear. The course went along Hwy 138 and of course San Bernardino County Fire was there to keep an eye on things. BE48 was staged at Summit Valley Rd at Hwy 138. The racers started coming through 1:15 pm and by 1:45 they had all passed.

San Bernardino County Fire - Car Over the Side - Summit Valley - 5-4-10

At 9:15pm, May 4th, 2010 San Bernardino County Fire responded to a reported traffic collision, car over the side. BE48 was the first to arrive at the scene and found a vehicle over the side approximately 100 feet in heavy brush. Firefighters Cox and Audet made their way down to the vehicle and determined that there were no occupants inside the vehicle. An area search was completed by Company 48, 40 and CHP H80. No victims were located. Units were BE48, ME40, MA304, BC141, CHP H80.

San Bernardino County Fire responded to a reported structure fire in the Johnson Valley area. The fire was reported about 8:15pm and was located on Joshua Tree Rd. near Ruby Canyon Rd. BE19 was the first unit on scene and found a working fire in a bedroom of the residence. BE19 was able to keep the fire in check until the next unit arrived and interior operations could begin. There were no injuries and the fire was contained to the room of origin. Units on scene were BE19, ME111, ME122, MA122, ME121, CALFIRE E3567 and BC137. In the El Sereno area of Los Angeles, at approximately 10pm an LAPD Hollenbeck Gang unit passed a black Honda traveling at a high rate of speed going in the opposite direction on Eastern Ave. The LAPD gang unit made a quick U turn and found the Honda had collided with a Prius near the intersection of Eastern Ave. & Klamath St. Each vehicle had only a driver. San Bernardino County Fire - Structure Fire - Landers - 2-8-10

At 5:22 pm on 2-8-10 San Bernardino County Fire was dispatched to the report of a residential structure fire in the 2800 block of Keeler Road in the unincorporated area of Yucca Valley. Upon arrival, Company 122 found a single room and contents fire. Company 122 made an attack and was able to contain the fire to the room of origin. The cause of the fire is under investigation. It took 3 minutes to extinguish the fire.

On February 5th at approximately 2am, a LA County Deputy Sheriff was involved in a Hit and Run accident at Imperial Hwy and Normandie Ave. The deputy was struck from the rear and sustained head injuries as a result. The deputy was treated at the scene by LA County Fire paramedics and then transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

LAFD Rollover 2-4-10

On February 2nd, at approximately 10:30 pm a single vehicle rollover occurred at 52nd Street and Broadway in South Central Los Angeles. The driver and any passengers were gone when TF33 arrived. More photos are available in the Gallery section.

San Bernardino City Extrication 1-29-10

On Friday, January 29, 2010, at approximately 10:30 pm, a big rig tow truck crashed on I215 in San Bernardino. The truck left the southbound lanes, went thru the center divider striking a pillar that supports Baseline Rd. The cab portion was crushed and resting against the pillar trapping the driver. The position that the truck was in and the extensive damage provided quite a challenge to San Bernardino City firefighters. It took just over two hours for the firefighters to extricate the driver. LAFD Physical Rescue 1-17-10 Hoover & Florence

On January 17, just after midnight LAFD TF33, E57, RA57 and RA257 responded to a Physical Rescue at Hoover St. & Florence Ave. in South Central Los Angeles. This two car, T-bone style TC had a total of 6 patients. One vehicle had two occupants and the second vehicle had four occupants, one that required extrication. A total of two were sent to an area trauma center.

LA County FD Truck Fire 1-8-10

LA County FD 41 and LAFD 64 responded to a reported Truck Fire on Figueroa just south of El Segundo Blvd. at approximately 4:45am. While I was headed that way I heard T64 report Loom Up. Thats always good to hear when trying to get some action shots. When the units arrived they found a well involved semi tractor.

LAFD Auto Fire under a carport 1-8-10

LAFD TF26 responded to an Auto Fire in the 2600 block of Dalton St. at 2am. Upon arrival they found a working auto fire under a carport. The residence was evacuated as fire attack began. No injuries reported, cause is suspicious.

LAFD South Central Incidents 12-27-09

I spent Saturday night down in the 'Pit' looking to get some fire in the lens. It was a fairly slow night as far as fire was concerned. There were multiple shootings and lots of LE activity but not much going on for fire. I did catch a TC at Bonsallo & Slauson and shortly after that a Truck Fire at Wilmington & 110th. Of course the truck fire was just far enough away that I arrived right after knockdown!

Saying Goodbye to a friend

On December 11th, 2009 Retired Battalion Chief Allen Miller lost his battle with cancer. Chief Miller was a member of the fire services for 39 years. His last assignment was with San Bernardino County Fire as BC 149.

I had the pleasure of working for Chief Miller during the transition to County Fire in 1999 and for several years after. Chief Miller was very warm and welcoming during the transition and I very much appreciated that. It was a time of uncertainty for myself and the Chief put me at ease very quickly. At that time the North Desert Division is where Chief Miller was assigned. The NDD is a very large division and we ran across each other frequently and it was not long before we were friends. His kindness and helping hand to myself and my station will be missed and not forgotten.

On Saturday December 19th, I, along with Chief Miller's family and many members of the San Bernardino County Fire Department attended a Celebration of Life and said Goodbye to retired Battalion Chief Allen Miller. Other departments that attended included CALFIRE, Apple Valley FPD, USFS and members of the USAF.

Compton FD Structure Fire

In the early morning hours of December 19th, Compton Fire E43 was dispatched to an auto fire in the 900 block of 137th Street. Upon arrval E43 found a working fire in a single family dwelling. E43 requested a full first alarm assignment. By the time I arrived most of the fire had been knocked down but some operations were still taking place.

LAFD Extrication with HR56

LAFD TF1, E47, Heavy Rescue 56 responded to a Physical Rescue on Hillsdale Dr. in the El Sereno area of East Los Angeles. By the time I arrived the single patient had been extricated and was being loaded into RA47 for transport. The call was intersting enough so I stuck around to get some pics of the heavy rescue removing the vehicles. The scene was at the bottom of a steep hill and a vehicle coming down the hill lost control, struck another parked, unoccupied vehicle and the both crashed into a house. Here are a few shots.

South Central 12-17/18-09

I spent the night in South central last night. There were several incidents and i got a few pics of the incidents I made it on scene of. The first was a vehicle into a business at 47th and Broadway. Then a TC at I105 and the 710 and a short time later a hit and run at 67th at Broadway. Broadway was a busy area last night. There was also a good extrication call in the El Sereno area of los Angeles but that will get its own post.

LAFD Commercial Greater Alarm 12-11-09

On Friday, December 11, 2009 at 5:30 AM, LAFD responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at the corner of Vermont and Florence in South Central Los Angeles. Tom's Jr. Burgers had a large loom up showing from the roof when the first units arrived. Firefighters had to use forcible entry to gain access to the interior. The bulk of the fire appeared to be in the attic. Three truck companies put their arieals to the roof, other firefighters laddered the rear of the building with ground ladders. Once ventilation was complete and the interior crews were able to get water on the seat of the fire, control was gained quickly. Enjoy the photos.

Anaheim 4 Alarm Fire

ANAHEIM – Two commercial buildings caught fire overnight, causing about $1.5 million in damages.

About 100 firefighters responded to the fire at 12:57 a.m. today in the 500 block of South Rose Street. Firefighters put out the fire in about an hour. There were no injuries. "When firefighters arrived on scene, there was a lot of smoke," said Anaheim Fire Department spokeswoman Maria Sabol. "Flames were about 30 feet up in the air." Fire agencies from Orange, Fullerton, Garden Grove, and Santa Ana assisted in putting out the fire. The two buildings that caught fire were at 558 and 556 South Rose Street. A small warehouse with electrical material inside was also damaged by the fire. Sabol said a produce business sustained around $250,000 in damages. There were 11 produce/ice-cream vehicles inside and six outside.
All together, there was about $1.5 million in damages to the 15,600-square-foot area. Apartment complexes nearby were evacuated as a precautionary measure, Sabol said. Hazmat units also responded because there was a possibility that one of the shops was a metal plating company and authorities were concerned about the presence of hazardous materials, Sabol said. The Hazmat units took air and water samples. All samples came out negative for hazardous materials. Anaheim police and fire are investigating the cause of the fire. "It appears to be accidental," Sabol said.

LAFD Auto Fire South Central

LAFD At approximately 12:15am, E64 responded to an auto fire in the 10400 block of Denver Ave. near 104th St. Upon arrival they found a well involved passenger vehicle. E64 had quick knockdown.

Rialto Structure Fire

On December 4th at approximately 8:30am a house caught fire in the 600 block of Cactus Ave. I was on my way home from LA when I heard some radio traffic related to the fire and then saw a loom up from a few miles away. By the time I arrived Rialto City Fire had knockdown. San Bernardino County assisted Rialto. I did get a few pics.

Today I have started the project of having a website built that will be the new home of FireWXPhoto. The site is being created by http://www.jasons-professional-graphics.com/. I am very excited to get this project underway. There will be a new blog page to go with the new 'web-blog' Jason will be building. When the new blog page is ready I will transfer all of this blog to the new one. For those followers and subscribers, I will notify you of the new page so you can follow me there. This blog will be maintained but only show a link to the new blog and website. In addition to the new blog, there will also be a photo gallery and video gallery page. I will keep you updated as to the progress.

New/old Off Road TC in Summit Valley

I know it has been a few weeks since my last update. It is not from a lack of trying on my part or a lack of emergency incidents. I went to LA on two occasions and while there were some incidents, none were anything that would make for good photos. I also worked a 72 hour shift over the holiday weekend, but there were just no 'Kodak Moments' to be had. While we were fairly busy, all of the calls were just not the kind of calls you photograph.

So, I dusted off some pics I took of a rescue we had on the 4th of July. This was of a motorcycle accident that occured on Cleghorn Ridge. This area is not easy to get to and our response time was close to 30 minutes. The crew on that day was myself, Mike Stachowicz, Justin Ayers, Kevin Crandall, Adam Payne and Adam Stiltner. Upon arrival we found a male with head injuries, internal injuries and ALOC. Due to his injuries and the remoteness of our location, I requested an Air Rescue. San Bernardino County Sheriff Air Rescue 6 was dispatched. The closest suitable LZ was over one half mile from the patient. Once we had the patient secured to the backboard we loaded him up on the back of a quad that was at the scene and SLOWLY took him to the awaiting Air 6 crew. Photos below....

Station Fire $50,000 reward renewed

County officials approved an extension Tuesday for a $50,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest or conviction of anyone responsible for the Station Fire, Los Angeles County's largest wildfire ever.

The original reward, approved in early September, was set to expire Dec. 7. Los Angeles County Supervisors unanimously approved the motion.

The Station Fire started off Angeles Crest Highway near La Canada-Flintridge on Aug. 26 around 3:30 p.m. The blaze was ruled a homicide because two county firefighters died fighting the blazes. Ultimately, 89 homes were destroyed and 250 square miles charred in the wildfire.

EPN Antenna Relocation

On Friday morning, Chris Nichols (EPN-560) and I went to Palmdale and met up with Jeff Zimmerman (EPN-409). Our objective for the morning was to take down a 440 MHz antenna from a tower located in the city of Palmdale. The antenna was up about 75'. Chris is OSHA CTC certified and has all the necessary safety gear. It took about 1 hour to get the antenna down and we will start using a new antenna located on Ten-Hi Mtn southwest of Palmdale. The coverage will be much better. Below are a few pics from the day.

LAFD E47 comes under attack while responding

On Halloween evening a fast moving wildfire was reported in the 500 block of Avenue 28 near the intersection of Johnston in Mount Washington area of Los Angeles. Engine 1 reported that they had at least 1 acre of grass moving up hill and ordered additional firefighting resources. While responding to this incident engine 47 came under gun fire on Mission Blvd, with a bullet narrowly missing the driver operator. The bullet came in from Engine 47 side window and exited out the front windshield. Remaining calm, engine 47 personnel continued into the fire and proceeded with fire attack.

San Bernardino County Fire - ATV Accident at Mean's Dry Lake

On 10-30-09, at approximately 6pm, an ATV rider crashed at the northwest corner of Mean's Dry lake. Due to her injuries, I requested an Air Ambulance for transport. San Bernardino County BE19, ME122, Morongo Basin Ambulance and CHP responded. Mercy Air 22, based out of Hesperia provided the air transportation.
